BOS vs CHoCH: How to Read Market Structure Shifts
Trends aren't random — they leave footprints. Two of the most useful are BOS (Break of Structure) and CHoCH (Change of Character). Learn to spot them and you'll know the difference between "the trend is healthy, keep going" and "something just changed, be careful."
First, define the trend with swings
An uptrend is a series of higher highs and higher lows. A downtrend is lower highs and lower lows. Mark those swing points on your chart — everything below is just reading what they do next.
BOS — Break of Structure (continuation)
A Break of Structure happens when price breaks past the previous swing in the direction of the trend. In an uptrend, price pushing above the last higher high is a bullish BOS — the trend is intact and continuing. BOS is your "stay with it" signal: it confirms momentum, not reversal.
CHoCH — Change of Character (potential reversal)
A Change of Character is the first crack. In an uptrend of higher highs and higher lows, a CHoCH is when price breaks below the most recent higher low — the structure that was holding the uptrend up. It doesn't guarantee a reversal, but it's the market's first hint that buyers are losing control. Smart traders tighten stops, take profit, or wait for confirmation after a CHoCH.
How to trade around them
- BOS in your direction: continuation — look to add or hold with the trend.
- CHoCH against your position: caution — your idea may be breaking; reassess.
- CHoCH then BOS the other way: a fuller reversal — the new trend is establishing.

Let the chart label the shifts
Spotting BOS and CHoCH live takes reps. The AI-Predict indicator labels structure shifts on your chart as they happen, so you can see at a glance whether the trend is continuing (BOS) or flipping (CHoCH) — then combine it with the trend ribbon and S/R zones for confluence before you act.
Key takeaways
- BOS = trend continuation (breaks the swing in the trend's direction).
- CHoCH = first sign of a possible reversal (breaks the swing holding the trend).
- Trade BOS with the trend; treat CHoCH as a warning to manage risk.
- Structure is context — pair it with levels and a plan, never trade it blind.
